Now that you have your colored wires connected to the K3 in "random order" (as you said), do not plug it in. Figure out which wires carry what signals, and match them to the K3 serial port pinout at the links provided. Then, if the voltage levels are correct and the wires are connected with appropriate signal connections, it should work (regardless of wire colors).
