My first taste of real Mexican food was in Texas--the first time that I was in Texas, probably 1981, but maybe 1982. Was in the Houston area visiting friends. One of the friends took me to a real Mexican restaurant. Prior to that, all that I knew was just Americanized (and I didn't realize it) stuff. The real Mexican was very different from anything that I had tasted before. I really liked it. Can't say that I've had any real Mexican food since, unfortunately.
Even the Mexican food varies from place to place.

Oh and no I do not have an oil well in the front yard and cattle on the back 40.
Though I did once have a goat (that was soon to be cabrito) show up on my back porch.
