What do you mean by "civilized front end for the tools from Calibre"? Is that "provides no options for customizing the ebook-convert settings"?
It appears the primary reason for using it is if one only wants to format-shift and cannot stand the idea of storing your books in a managed (and manageable) library.
Well, okay then, if that floats you boat... but I challenge your assertion that calibre makes messes. It doesn't make any messes whatsoever, it just organizes your books in a way that precludes your own preexisting folder-based structure.
Regardless, you can still just convert all your books to a suitable format. Of course, since you insist on micro-managing the ebook files it will take longer to trigger manual conversions, which I guess explains why you are so hesitant to convert and instead want a nonexistent device which supports every format out there.
