There is, and Wetdogeared's post after yours gives pointers.
The key to remember is that politics and religion are emotional topics, and commentary can get heated. By opting in you agree you are aware of that and prepared to deal with it.
I tend to avoid such topics. I can deal with heated discussion. The problem is that the topics tend to be Religious Arguments(tm). The underlying attitudes and beliefs are gut level, and not normally subject to rational discussion. I don't normally expect anything I say to change the mind of another party in such cases, and don't waste time trying. I may be curious about precisely what someone else believes, and why they
want to believe it, but I don't expect to
alter their belief.
(Watching the current three ring circus, (complete with
lots of clowns) that is the current Presidential primaries, my "point and laugh" reflex gets constant stimulus from both parties. Since I do have other things to do besides pointing and laughing, I pay as little attention as possible to the show.)
