I would NEVER rely upon any ereader as the primary store for my books. They are too important to me.
Remember Calibre is free. All of my books are stored in Calibre. From there, a backup copy is ceated on another hard drive.
Then, and only then, I copy a small (2 x 25) collection to my ereader. These books are then flagged in a Calibre column headed OK (On Kobo or On Kindle, as the case may be. I use both.) I have another Calibre column to indicate Read Candidates (RC). The RC list in Calibre can be as long as you like, but I like to keep it manageable When a book is transferred to the reader, its RC flag is deleted, and replaced by an OK flag.
Once my current OK books have been read, they are deleted from the reader, and another collection is chosen from the RC list.
So, if anyhing should go amiss with my reader, it is an annoyance, but not a disaster.
I hope these ideas are helpful.
