And they've sporadically reported quarterly profits before. Usually by accident. Once to make the point to investors they could report profits if they reduced their investing in new businesses.
The difference this time is that AWS and merchant services and (presumably) house brand electronics are churning out much more money than even Bezos can properly invest.
I'm sure he's evaluating all sorts of added investment (and acquisition) options but they're not yet making enough money to adopt Google's dartboard investment strategies.
For now they'll just have to suffer the hit to their reputation.
