I think the civilized approach to this issue (and aren't we all civilized, after all?) is to realize that a group of dots, one atop another and then twisted JUST SO, can actually be made to resemble a question mark.
My logic is irrefutable: We are all civilized, therefore periods are worth more than question marks, since it takes more periods to do the job.
