Just finished Bachelors Get Lonely (1961) by [I]Erle Stanley Gardner. For the first time, Donald is offered by Bertha to spend his time as he would wish.

‘Just what you’re supposed to be doing as a gentleman of leisure,’ Bertha said, ‘going to the races and the ball games…. Dammit, it makes me mad to think of me slaving here in the office while you’re getting your expenses paid going around to ball games, horse races, cocktail lounges and high-class restaurants.’

‘Expenses come high,’ Donald said, ‘going to horse races, ball games, taking dames out to—’

'Dammit to hell,’ Bertha screamed, ‘you’re not a millionaire! You’re just a lousy punk who’s got it made and would be interested as hell in an income of two hundred and fifty to five hundred and fifty on that lot. Don’t think you’re going to play Prince Charming to a bunch of these tramps that—.....'

But the case turns into two incidents involving a Peeping Tom in a Motel. Bertha, who has warned Donald to steer clear of the dangerous jobs and stick to aiding solid, sane citizens like Carson. And all Carson wants is the name of the informer in his office who is passing on confidential material to a business rival. When the rival is murdered at the Motel, it looks as though Bertha has picked the wrong client....
