I have had several "dysplastic nevi" (suspicious moles) removed. Most were simple excisions, but the doctor was especially concerned about one on my chest and went with a fairly deep conical biopsy. The last one did hurt a bit, and took a while to heal.
That was 30 years ago. No problems then, or since.
Don't worry (too much). If it's anything serious it sounds like they're catching it very early. And I suspect the results are much more likely to be "Nothing serious but it's good we checked."
