As I recall, the problem with Amazon freebies and self-publishing is that once you set a book up, you can change the price but not add or remove one. That is, you can't change it from free to not-free (or vice versa) unless you use KDP Select, which requires exclusivity. There are several other Select-only marketing tools, like being able to schedule discounts, but that's the biggie.
