When my husband and I quit smoking 9 years ago, we were spending an average of $50 a week on cigarettes. It was going up to $80 a week with the new tax they added so we quit.
Yes, I still think of "luxuries" in terms of that $50.
At 9 years ago prices: the Oasis would be not smoking for 6 weeks.
At today's prices: about 2 weeks.
It amazes me how fast that money we aren't spending on cigarettes adds up.
So no, one does not have to be upper middle class to have nice things.
