Yes, it all needs to be run with sudo -- administrative commands always do.
But I'd just like to confirm that the monitor does indeed claim there is no input signal the whole time.
If the OS was simply displaying nothing at the moment, the monitor would be accepting input (of a black square without the usual Window Manager widgets).
