You might be right about their motivation being altruistic. But their specials are so specific (e.g., the Van Morrison album deal going on now) that it makes me think that that they are better at cutting special deals with specific artists/publishers, or perhaps that, with what deals they cut, they pass along at least some of the savings to the consumer more than iTunes, Amazon,
et al. do.
Regardless of their motivation, their great deals probably help their overall sales. I don't buy much music, except when I run across great deals like Google Play often has. But when I want to buy music, Google Play is the first seller that I think of now! In fact, a moment ago I was struggling to think of who else sells music and I was having a difficult time thinking of anyone else!
