Just resize them, I would say. You could try out different jpg compressions too, but text gets blurry fast. Where your level of tolerance is, you have to find out. Making the images smaller makes them worse, so you have to see how small you can make them and still enjoy them.

I found comic reader apps much more comfortable than reading them as epubs and easier to browse in them too. If you want to manage all your readings through one app, maybe try calibre companion as a hub or try moonreader, which can read cbz/cbr, epubs and pdfs.

If you still want to convert them to epub, calibre offers quite a lot of conversion options. Try to enter a custom image size etc. Have you set output device to generic tablet?
