I ran into this when installing a bit of gamers' software that would enable DOS WordStar to run on my Windows 7 desktop, which had defied every other solution. (Oddly, since a laptop with the identical OS and 32-bit architecture had no problem with it.) The software worked fine but absolutely could not find the font I wanted (Consolas, as it happened.) Turned out my machine had tucked them in a non-standard folder.
