It is how light works.
More specifically, it's how diffraction gratings work, and the Kindle's light guide is a diffraction grating. (As I understand it, the reason you don't see a rainbow effect with the Kindle's built-in light is that LED light is nearly monochromatic. The reason you don't see a *strong* LSD-trip rainbowing when the Kindle is exposed to any non-LED, non-laser external light source light is because very little of the light is diffracted when it enters from that direction. It's a clever piece of design!)
