As DiapDealer has already pointed out, it might be a third party shell extension that causes this issue.
Another possibility is a misbehaving graphics driver.

Sorry - I forgot to respond to this. There's nothing untoward in the event log, I get daily reports from LOGalyze and the the graphics subsystem is working fine.
