You're right, waterproof stereo jacks do appear to exist (I didn't previously know that). However I rather doubt if a designer, having gone to the expense of an aluminium alloy chassis (where most eReaders are plastic), would balk at the expense of a waterproof jack. Far more likely that it was a design issue (e.g. space, structural integrity and/or the designer simply thinking that Bluetooth covered it).
