A quick way to check to see if a name has been used is to use the search function. It has saved me from using an already-used name again (I wanted to post "Little Eeffin'
Annie" but someone had already used "Annie").
One of the reasons multiple variations of names are allowed is to make it easy to determine if a name has been used. Using the examples in the rules, if using "Katherine" also locked out all of its variations (Kathy, Cathy and Catherine among them) would make it extremely difficult to determine if a name can be used. But only having to search for "Katherine" is easy. It also allows more people to participate.
