I took a huge chance on buying eInk again but the higher ppi and better lighting has taken away any eye strain.
My PW1 at 10 would be blinding in the dark. 8 was the setting I used during the day but in the dark 6.

The problem of any white area, backlit or frontlit, is that it reflects light badly. I tried reading from an e-ink reader (H2O in my case) at night (pitch dark room), but I get either blinded by the background (which made me squint and that is tiresome) or with such a low contrast that I cannot read anymore. I recently added the night mode to my Kobo (I don't know if that's an option for Kindles or not), which gives me a black screen and white letters. That did the trick for me, I can have a good contrast and still not get blinded by the white background.
