The designers have said it's because waterproofing would have made it weigh more. That's obviously the factor that was their primary concern over everything else. And that's probably a big reason why we won't see a larger screen from them.
Amazon has decided you don't need it to be waterproof, you need it lighter! They don't care that both Kobo and Nook have had waterproof ereaders for a while now. (I think Onyx is releasing a waterproof model soon too.)
