I suspect it's well-nigh impossible to avoid living near sex offenders. I've checked the Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry from time to time and I don't believe we've ever lived very far from one. Just take solace in in that you know who to be wary of and who not to let babysit. Like rattlesnakes, it's the ones you don't see that are dangerous.
I just checked. There are currently 108 registered sex offenders in my zip code alone.
