Here in the US, the common term is Keeping up with the Joneses.
Keep in mind that this trend only started about 75 years ago and became really prominent 10 years or so later.

On CBS at 10 am, there is an hour long show dedicated to new products. It is now in its 60th year. The show is The Price is Right.
Our local CBS channel was founded in 1956.
It was in 1970 or 71, that I learned why we have commercials. I was either 4 or 5.
