My guess is Jeff was tweeting anyway so his marketing team told him to do a teaser.
I don't think the trial run had anything to do with it.

Keep in mind that I know nothing about the French or French marketing.

That teaser tweet made Jeff's followers feel special because they were told first about the new device. That alone probably accounted for 1000 or more sales.
The reason is some people have to be the first among their friends and colleagues to have the newest device. Mostly for bragging rights.


Now me, oh cool you didn't like/it didn't do what you thought it would do. Now I can get a used one at a reasonable price.
