Let's not forget that the US site also fulfils Kindle orders for a number of other countries that don't have a local Amazon. That probably goes some way in explaining September ship dates on .com whilst the various European Amazon sites have 2nd half of June at the latest depending on options (earliest is April 29 now).
Edit: and as far a general buying habits go, the Brits will buy overpriced stuff they don't need because they feel they deserve a treat, put it on credit because they can't afford it, and then complain that it's all a Great Big Scam when they need to pay for it
