Dear BetterRed, thanks for your help. I did the system file check (no problems found), disabling all programs in start-up and then finding the culprit by trial and error was a bit too much for an amateur like me.
Calibre dóes work in safe mode and your last suggestion, portable version, works OK as well.
So my problem is solved.
