Were you running the latest software? The more recent firmwares for the devices they've put out for the last 3 or 4 years are all in all quite stable and not at all the glitch fests some of the earlier firmwares were.

If Kindle, Nook and Kobo are out then you'd have to look at some of the third party devices that aren't tied to stores. AFAIK you're only option would be to order them online site unseen as no one locally sells them in Canada or the US. Those manufacturers would be ones like Onyx, Pocketbook and Boyue.

If you decide want help potentially fixing this you can try posting in the Kobo forums here. There are quite a few individuals who are knowledgeable about Kobo's and things to try to fix them.
