Products it produces just have to sell to enough of the market to be profitable, the same as any other business. You expand product markets by finding niches and filling them.
A lot of us (including me, but not a majority) want water resistant readers for outdoors. Amazon looked at the competition already filling that niche, and decided to go after the market for lightweight ergonomic readers first. There isn't competition for that sector yet, nobody was filling it.
