Oho! The phraseology saves me. I've technically only got three ebooks going, which is well within my ideal parameter (if I don't count the ebook that backs up my audiobook for times I zone out). But add in audio and paperbooks and it's six, and it's only six as I've just finished up my lighter listen and haven't cracked a new one yet.

When things are chugging along as I'd like, I'm in the four-to-five range in toto. One audiobook plus three ebooks in my Goldilocks methodology: one hard, one medium, one easy. My MO is to read the most difficult book I can focus on at that particular time. Hard may be too hard, on a weekday evening when I'm tired. The fifth book is a swing title, perhaps a second audiobook to break up a long one, or an additional book in one of my categories because one is a paperbook.

But once I go over five (and four is better), I start to lose the various strings as I'm not getting to each often enough to keep it current. I feel as if I'm floundering. I really need to clear the decks right now, but it'll take a bit.
