Would "The Band" be considered a group of "studio musicians"? If so, I am familiar with the concept. Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (aka "The Swampers") also did a huge amount of that kind of work, for a lot of artists, during that period of time. "The Band" may have done backup singing, though, where The Swampers didn't.

The oddest band I ever heard of is "The Stamps Quartet". It has been going strong for 92 years. Note: there was not always a Stamps in the quartet. The quartet was formed to sell Virgil and Frank's gospel music and at one point there were at least 3 gospel groups with that name.
Frank toured some but I don't think Virgil did.
Now my great-grandmother told my mother that she remembered her uncles coming over to play. Frank and Virgil were her uncles.
