The Kindle's firmware expects to have exclusive use of that internal USB connection to the 3G card.

Since the Kindle's are known to work **WITHOUT** the 3G card working - just taking it away from the firmware is not the problem.

The problem is that many (most?) of the system files are checksum'd and the checksums stored in a manifest that is checked on each re-boot.

(Which point I had forgotten when I added a file to my K2 and then let it re-boot a couple of weeks ago. The DX is just a large screen K2 for the purposes here.)
