The SIM card is external to the modem/radio card - can your old laptop handle that sort of set-up?
I.E: some modem/radio cards have an integrated SIM socket rather than wiring it out through the connector.

mntroot rw
stop and think first what you are doing.
The system image files are normally R/O for a reason.
