You can root that easily enough, then you can do whatever you want or use it with anything. Personally I would root it, install a good ebook reader such as FBreader (although there are a few good ones). And you are all set. Granted the new books won't "magically" appear on your Nook, but since you do have Calibre, use that for your ebook manager. And after rooting the Nook, you can do anything you want with it. I wouldn't bother getting another device, especially if you like the Nook.
That is what I am going to do, if Nook goes down, I will keep using my devices (I have several Nooks but not the Glowlight plus). The only difference is where I get my books from. Right now I get them all over anyway, so it won't be much of a change.
Here is one tip, I *think* after rooting you can install dropbox on the Glowlightplus. Then you can put a large library of books on dropbox and download them as you need/want. I know some people seem to hate plugging in a cable these days, and that way you can have the books transferred wireless.
