Funny (true) story . . . . I got the recipe from a woman who was a terrible cook. She couldn't boil water without scorching it (ha). But she made the most wonderful old-fashioned caramel cake! I've come to the conclusion that it is because you have to burn sugar to an extent (caramelize it) in order to make the caramel icing, and she was good at burning stuff that she cooked! My mother is a great cook, but she cannot make that kind of caramel icing as well as the woman who gave me the recipe. haaha
