Those Brontė women

There's an interesting article on the BBC website today about the Brontė sisters, their heroines and their influence.

I haven't read either Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre in decades after compulsively reading and rereading them in my adolescence, but I was always a Cathy fan instead of Jane. However, I finally read Villette only last year, when it made my ten-best list, and Lucy Snowe is definitely a contender.

The author links the Brontė women to contemporary protagonists, for good or ill. I'm not sure I agree that Katniss Everdene is a deathless character, but she makes a case for it. Overall, a fun and provocative article, even if the author is obviously shilling for an upcoming biography of Anne.
