Actually, the read aloud app on a cell phone/tablet can still be used even in airplane mode. A device that wouldn't work unless it was connected probably wouldn't be considered ADA compliant, which was part of your reasoning for connecting the Kindle to Alexa.
What does the connectivity of cable boxes have to do with anything? Last time I checked, cable boxes were not meant to be portable in any way, and also had no "accessibility" features built in to them.
