I would recommend you set the light to where you need it. Defaults are not always good.
I have to turn lights way down on any screen I use, my husband on the other hand has his screens on bright. Note: we are 50 and 60 respectively but have worn glasses since elementary school.
I don't know if that correlates to me being near sighted and him being far sighted.

Ereaders and some phones adjust themselves to background light.

Yes, that's what I've done; set it to a comfortable level and leave the auto off. It's just that I thought the auto would decrease battery drain.
