The lack of an integrated back-light (if it's true) would suggest non-e-ink (i.e. Liquavista).

This actually is not true. It can function both ways (reflective and transmissive).
I suspect the rumour is untrue. Either that, or Amazon has chosen to make their version of Liquavista reflective only, possibly to improve quality.
All massive speculation...It's probably just a water-proofed Voyage.
