The main thing about the AMP that makes it special is its giving inline within the text "additional phases of meaning included in the original word, phrase, or clause of the original language" for a key word, phrase, or clause. There is an excellent elaboration on this, and an example, in the Preface (view-able in Amazon's preview).
People seem to love this Bible--it's got a 4.6 star rating at Amazon.
Although I didn't see it mentioned anywhere on the title page, it is mentioned later on in the book that this is the 1987, "Expanded" edition.
