Reading Red Mars is a good set up for the next two books, though... it's like reading LoTR without reading Hobbit... it's doable, but the experience is more enjoyable if you read the one book first.

Finished The Queen of the Tearling, which I enjoyed more than I expected. Now reading Odd Thomas for reals this time... took me about a chapter and a half to realize that I saw the movie, but that's okay-- don't remember the end and the writing is pretty good.
