I can understand Mobileread not wanting to get involved in someone else's copyright issues, and I'd probably do the same as you have done given the same set of circumstances.

But not being able to tell your American subscribers that a particular work of fiction is in the Public Domain in their country and it is in the MR download library, just because it is not in the Public Domain elsewhere, seems a disservice to the American users.

Maybe a rule that users can say a given work is in the public domain in a specific country but only if they include a list of three or so PD Download libraries they could check to see if it was available would satisfy the copyright police.

I do know that shutting down discussion on what is or is not in PD in specific countries and where a work can be found completely, seems very unsatisfying.
