It was a fable--more like a folk tale--about a soup that started out with just one stone. Seems like the woman making it couldn't afford even to make soup. More or less, yes. Everyone had a few veggies or odd bits of meat, piled together with a lot of water, it made soup to feed them all.
(and, if you know that people used to heat water and cook by adding hot stones to water, the story makes even more sense).
