Device: Onyx Boox Max
@eturgeon, I'm a programmer like yourself, trying to find a non-light-emitting device that I could do my work on. I don't suffer from physical issues though, I just really, really want to work outdoors (although some years ago my eyesight started deteriorating rapidly, but that's fixed now, and I don't even need to wear glasses).

I currently intend to get the Boox Max, discussed here, and see how much I can hack it to do what I need from it.

Some pointers based on my experience and what I've read on the thread:

AMOLED allows selective color display, if it's supported by the controller and the software. On my Samsung Galaxy S3 I'd use Galactic Night - red-only mode, low brightness makes using the device at night a non-damaging experience. I don't know how other devices fare, but afaik since Android 4.4 that can be done in software, and there's apps for that: "Color Changer" from the same developer, "CF.Lumen", probably more.

On the desktop I use redshift (f.lux if you're on windows / mac). It's a must for the odd evening at the computer, the normal blue tone is an eye killer. I also have a dark theme for everything, and use a global dark style on Firefox using Stylish, with custom styles for specific sites. I used to use this only in the evening, but nowadays I browse like that most of the time, on most sites.

I use incandescent lighting whenever possible - I have a halogen desk lamp near my computer, that I turn on when it starts getting dark, and avoid the overhead lights. It makes for a nice, warm ambient and a smooth transition to evening mode. Also, if you watch TV, never do it with the lights fully off. A diffuse light behind the TV will make it much, much better.

And finally, there's the lifestyle changes. Try spending as much time out in nature, see what happens. Physical exercise will do wonders, and both together doubly so. Someone mentioned meditation, which will definitely help, but I'd suggest simple "mindfulness meditation" (Zazen practice), which will alleviate much of the stress that's likely to be behind your issues. If this takes you on a path which you want to follow further, then Vipassana has the potential to fully "cure" you, but it won't work if pursuing the health benefits alone.
