Descriptive. Most of his books could easily be a hundred or more pages shorter and lose nothing of the plot. That being said, I enjoy his prose enough that the extra description doesn't bother me.

I still think his Otherland series is one of the most brilliant works of sci-fi/fantasy ever written.
