Bujold, Lee and Miller, and David Drake are great. Ryk Spoor is a newer author that has written some very solid stuff, both fantasy and sci-fi.

I think Baen really shines as a publisher of classic sci-fi authors. Poul Anderson is probably my favorite author, and Baen has published a lot of his work. James Schmitt is another classic author that gets overlooked that Baen has brought back to print.

That being said, I'm not a huge fan of some of the ultra-right wing military sci-fi they publish, and that seems to be their bread and butter these days.
