Matched books, metadata not updating

Windows Vista, Calibre version 2.7. Kindle Paperwhite 2nd edition.

It had been a year since I did any serious work with cleanup up the library on the desktop, and in the meantime I've got quite a lot of books that were loaded directly onto the Kindle. Many were already downloaded to the desktop via the Kindle application, then loaded into Calibre - but of course the "on device" copy didn't match up to the library copy.

So one by one I've been doing the "match to library" from the device. From the device view, the titles have an icon that looks like a book with an arrow, instead of the green checkmark; when I hover, it says "waiting for metadata to be updated".

I've done the step of right clicking on the device icon and selecting "update cached metadata on device", but the "waiting for Godot" icon never changes to a green arrow (and it's been a few hours since I started this).

When I switch to library view, the books show up with the green checkmark.

Are my expectations wrong? Do I just need to delete the books and reload them onto the device using Calibre? (or, copy them to the library from the device and then delete the older copy in the library?).
