There's the only Hardware improvement I can imagine.

Whiter background may not be a concern for people who like the front light on all the time to emulate the white background. But I've been more and more preferring a clip-on light to a front light in a totally dark room. After about a year with a front-lit e-reader (PW2), I'm feeling bothered by a front light in a dark room about as much as by a back-lit LCD. I'm coming around to the camp of those here who say "a photon is a photon." (That doesn't explain why I'm preferring a clip-on light.)
