Virtually every place I've ever lived that didn't have official spaces had unofficial ones. I agree with Peter -- it's very likely what you're running in to. BUT, that being said, the way to handle it is not to block someone's car in, but to leave a polite "excuse me, but this is 'my spot' and I'd appreciate it if you'd use a different spot for your car." I rarely found the need to resort to keying someone...
ETA: Oh, and I do agree - the guy was a jerk, in case that wasn't clear in my original post.
