Alternatively, you will either invest in fixing little problems as they come along, or big problems once every few years on a dist-upgrade.

I also think it is incredibly annoying to try to build software on Ubuntu, due to complicated arrangements for development headers, etc. -- plus the build system seems very confusing.

And here you are, trying to circumvent Ubuntu's aging software sources by building it yourself.
