Short story writing is a very long-established genre in Russian literature. Are you not aware, for example, that Anton Chekhov, best known today as a playwright, also wrote detective stories? (Very good ones, too. They're available in English translation in a collection called "A Night in the Cemetery: And Other Stories of Crime and Suspense".)
